I have a passion for beauty, balance and self-expression. I love to explore the subtle realms of language, feeling, communication and understanding and to work to guide others comfortably through these realms. For me, the varied fields I find myself working in allow the expression of these passions and dovetail with one another perfectly.

About Emily

Emily Graves, MA, LMT NM#6901, MFA Candidate, is an accomplished manual and energetic therapist with a healing practice rooted in Thai Medicine; she is a fierce, joyful and technical Muay Thai devotee and teacher; a writer, musician and movement-maker, and a practitioner and maker of plant medicine. In addition to her own healing practice, she teaches Thai Massage and Deep Tissue in the Massage Therapy licensing program at Santa Fe Community College and Creative Writing and Multimodal Composition in the English Department at UNM Albuquerque, where she is also working on an MFA in Fiction. She is known for her extraordinary sensitivity, wide-ranging skills and experience, the care and respect she shows her clients and students and her commitment to positive, visionary change.

She has been a writer, musician, movement practitioner, teacher and gardener all her life, a practicing Muay Thai boxer since 1997 and has worked as a professional manual and energetic therapist since 2001, excelling in her primary field of Thai Massage and Thai Medicine. Sessions include the familiar clothed Thai Massage session on a mat on the floor, as well as Thai therapies that can be incorporated into table or mat sessions, such as cupping, scraping, herbal balls and herbal compresses, advice on herbal medicine protocols and nutrition, Thai Four Elements assessment, and working with shifting energetic patterns and mental ‘stories’ which may be locking painful body habits in place.

Emily is experienced at working with adults, youth, children, babies and family groups and has extensive experience in working with women at all stages of life, in particular, in helping to assist with pelvic bowl, pelvic floor, core, prenatal and postnatal and menstrual situations and pathologies of all kinds.

Emily is also recognized for her poetry and fiction, her creative songwriting and expressive musicianship and her skills as a teacher, of both youth and adults. She has numerous publication credits to her name and is author of the poetry book, Ballad of the Breathless (Spout Press, 2008), as well as five other chapbooks These chapbooks were written, created and distributed in the years 1994-2001 as a collaboration with visual artist Jessica Dickinson. Her first album of songs is titled, “A Wolf Speaks” and was completed in 2006. She is currently working on an MFA in Fiction at UNM, Albuquerque where she also teaches in the English Department, finishing a novel, writing short pieces regularly and sings with a Sacred Music performance ensemble, Schola Cantorum, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in addition to working on her own music. She also teaches yoga, mindfulness and healthy living practices as a volunteer to children each week at Atalaya Elementary school.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota Honors Program with a B. A. in Film Studies and concentrations in Creative Writing and Latin American Studies, in 1996. Her work focused heavily on the creation, construction, analysis and impact of narrative/s on individuals and groups and their perception of themselves and of place. Her final project focused on poetic narrative in the films of Jonas Mekas and the experience, creation and transformation of memory and history. She received her M.A. from New York University’s Draper Interdisciplinary Program in Humanities and Social Thought, with an emphasis on Literary Cultures and Arts Worlds, in 1999. Her graduate thesis titled, “Revolution in Four Hands,” delved into the long-term effects a “trauma-narrative” has in the physical body, and, on societal groups, as well as ways for groups and individuals to creatively heal from trauma and notions of victimhood to rebuild a coherent internal sense of power, meaning, and love in their bodies and their physical surroundings and lives through re-telling or re-creating story through words, movement, and creative expression.

Emily has been a professional teacher since 1996 and a healing arts professional since 2001. She co-founded her first integrative yoga and healing arts center, Anahata, in Barcelona, Spain in 2003.
